Travel to Crete Greece – Stavrochori! Enjoy a walk in a traditional village and taste amazing food!

Every time I am in my favorite Crete, everytime I have the chance to visit more traditional villages. Actually this is something usual in the island, since there are too many small villages, all of them traditional and so beautiful and with hidden treasures! So when my friend told me to visit Stavrochori and taste the traditional tastes in the main taverna of the villge, I did it. And it was an amazing excursion that we enjoyed so much!

Stavrochori of Lasithi, is in the south Crete close to the village of Makris Gialos and only 50minutes away from Agios Nikolaos. It is actually the perfect place to visit on a hot day, since the small square of the village with the big oat tree is the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer and yummy traditional Cretian food. The village has almost 150 people living there and their main occupation is agricalture and breeding animals. The first name of the village was Stavrodoksari, which actually was the family name of the vilagge’s founder. The village be insituted after the repossess of Crete from Nikiforo Foka.

The village has too many churches to admire and of course spend your time to walk in the small roads of it. Traditional houses, amazing colors, grapes and flowers and so many aromas! All of them in this small village, while the citizens will always offer you their hospitality! Just do not forget to visit also the Forest of Petrolivanou, next to the monastery of Zoodohou Pigis.

The houses of the village are all of them traditional, but what you can admire is actually thier color, since it is not always the usual white. Pastel colors and beautiful blues are the main colors, not only of the wooden doors and windows but also of the walls! What I loved also were the small backyards full of flowers! The amazing thing was that these backyards were open for accees to everyone! usually during the afternoon and the nights, people living in the neighborhood, gather in these backyards and having discussion and taste yummy food….this is actually standard!

If you done with your discoveries and you are thirsty or hungry, then go but in the small square of the village and visit the traditional taverns you will find there. Both of them have amazing tastes, traditional food and low prices! We have enjoyed them and we will definately going to visit them, at least, once more next year on our Summer vacation!
